iOS 5 already out of jail

Hackers attack the next-generation mobile OS within hours of it being revealed

Less than a day after Apple executives announced their next mobile operating system, iOS 5, hackers managed to jailbreak it.

The news first emerged on Twitter, when user MuscleNerd linked to some images to prove it. The images show a jailbroken version of iOS 5 running on a fourth-generation iPod touch. MuscleNerd, a well-known member of the iOS jailbreaking scene, gained root access to the device, and was able to install some jailbreak-only apps.

The new jailbreak requires some patience to use, as the device will need to be tethered to a PC each and every time the device is rebooted.

The jailbreak isn't perfect, but if past experiences are anything to go by, an untethered jailbreak will probably come out at some point in the future.
