Autumn launch for iOS 5

Apple gave users their first glimpse of iOS 5 during the keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference on 6 June. Developers have already been given a copy of iOS 5, the next iteration of the company's mobile operating system, but the finished version is not set for general release until sometime this autumn.

Among the 250 new features planned for iOS 5 is the Notifications Center. This will combine all your alerts in one place, which you will be able to access at any time with a single swipe down from the menu at the top of your iOS device.

Apple is also introducing a new Reminders app with iOS 5. This will include a feature that uses GPS to allow your device to remind you about a task when you arrive at, or depart from, a specific location.

and other distracting elements, leaving only text; Reading List, an

easy way to save an interesting story for later reading; and tabbed browsing, currently limited to the iPad.

Although Apple previously rejected apps that implemented such a feature, iOS 5 will enable you to press the volume buttons on your handset to take photos, instead of using the onscreen shutter button.

Also new to iOS 5 is Newsstand, a devoted app for accessing and downloading digital magazines and newspapers. While talking about iOS 5 at the
conference, Scott Forstall, Apple's vice president of iOS software, said that "most of the major publishers of magazines and many newspapers" have already signed up for App Store subscriptions - see p12 for more details about this feature.

As rumoured in the run-up to the WWDC, iOS 5 is set to include the iMessage app, which will send texts, photos, videos and contacts, and allow for group messaging.

Starting with iOS 5, new iPhones will display a welcome set-up screen, allowing you to activate your device wirelessly, without a computer. You will no longer need to sync to your iTunes account in order to get the latest software updates either.

Game Center and Mail have both been improved, and other new features include AirPlay mirroring to your television wirelessly, Wi-Fi iTunes sync, a new iPad Music app, typing shortcuts, and voice-over options.
