FACEBOOK PARTNERS WITH SKYPE ON VIDEO CHAT

Facebook has joined forces with Skype to allow free video calls to be made on the social network. Skype is powering the VoIP technology behind Facebook's Video Calling, but you don't need to install any software. Simply press the video icon at the top of a Chat window to make a call. "Video Calling is so easy," said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. "Your least-technical friend will be able to get online with video chat and get connected.  Microsoft was a key factor in the deal going ahead, having acquired Skype earlier this year for around $8.5bn and invested $240m in Facebook in 2007. Video Calling launched within weeks of Google announcing its still-in-beta, rival social network, Google+. Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group, said Facebook might have been successful in taking off some of Google+'s lustre.

"This is Facebook both responding to Google's announcement and pointing out to the market that it has at least a 749 million-user lead," Olds said. Facebook has also redesigned its Chat sidebar to list only the people you message most. It autoadjusts to fit the height of the browser window. Furthermore, the social network has launched a group chat function - one of its most-requested features. This lets you chat to multiple friends simultaneously in the same Chat window. To use the feature, click 'Add Friends to Chat' during a Chat session. However, Facebook has missed a trick by not merging its Video Calling and group chat features. Unlike Google+'s Hangouts, Video Calling doesn't support multiple users.
