Waste tyre collection plan gaining traction

The 12 year research project undertaken by most tyre suppliers to the SA market - such as importers, retreaders and tyre manufacturers - in finding a way to effectively manage the environmentally threatening and unending stream of waste tyres, is still gaining traction. The South African Tyre Recycling Process Company (SATRP), a section 21 company established by the project supporters, submitted a comprehensive waste tyre processing plan to the Department of Environmental Affairs. In terms of the National Environmental Management Waste Act of 2008 and the Waste Tyre Regulations, 2009, all tyre producers are required to submit an integrated industry waste tyre management plan to the Minister of Environmental Affairs for approval. Tyre producers, dealers and importers have the option to submit their own plan or to align themselves with an existing plan. The SATRP plan was published by the Department in the Government Gazette for general comment in early 2010. All comments received by the Department in response to the Plan’s publication in the Gazette were addressed and the next step is for the SATRP Plan to be formally gazetted, to enable implementation. I caught up with Dr. Etienne Human, CEO of the SATRP Company, to get an update on where matters stand.
