Australian budget electronics brand Kogan has launched its first laptop in the UK. The Agora Pro runs Ubuntu Linux 11.04. The Kogan is fitted with a 12in screen, and weighs just 1.3kg. It takes a low-power Intel processor, and is perhaps more like a netbook than the 'ultraportable' laptop Kogan labels it as. Inside the Agora Pro we find a single-core Intel Pentium SU2700 processor, a useful 2GB of RAM and a large 500GB hard disk. The laptop also runs Intel GS40 graphics. The Agora Pro is available only in black, with a glossy plastic lid and a matt screen that works well in daylight. But its resolution of 1366x768 pixels takes it firmly out of claustrophobic netbook territory. There's an SD/MS card reader, three USB 2.0 ports, plus HDMI and VGA outputs. The keyboard is full-size, with black Scrabble tile-style keys. These are a bit loose and wobbly, but quick typing is still easy. The Kogan's trackpad is sensitive, if small, although it would be tricky to fit anything larger, given the limited available space. The Fn keys add hardware roles to their duties, including volume control and Sleep. Also here are dedicated buttons for toggling the 3G and Bluetooth on and off. The Kogan has no 3G modem, however. Mouse buttons are located below a single shiny bar, complementing the chrome-effect strip between the screen and keyboard. The Kogan was a little noisy in our tests, with a fan revving away under normal load. Useful programs are preloaded with Ubuntu, including email, office productivity, social networking and media apps. Many more programs are available for free download from the Ubuntu Software Center. The Agora Pro is also capable of running Windows. We feel Ubuntu is a better fit, given the slow processor. We recorded a poor 142-minute runtime under normal use. This is due to the Kogan's undersized 31Wh battery, which does at least keep down the laptop's weight. The build quality is reasonable, but its budget price is evident. This is most noticeable in the wobbly keys, but also in their inconsistency: there are two buttons for Wi-Fi, and there's that redundant 3G hotkey. Verdict This Kogan Agora Pro is in essence a netbook, but it improves on the standard Wintel blueprint. It looks smart, feels mostly solid and runs the Ubuntu operating system with ease. Battery life is its biggest letdown.
