Older women residing in assisted living and
extended care facilities often lose their privacy and
suffer a loss of sexual freedom.
2. Sexual intimacy between married or unmarried
and consenting individuals may present
difficulties for facility staff who are concerned
about safety and legal issues. Family members
may also object to the expression of intimacy
between their aging relative and others in the
facility. The family physician can serve an
important role in addressing the concerns of the
family and the older patient.
3. Practitioners can advocate for their patients in
allowing privacy and conjugal visits, or
permission medically stable individuals to
participate in home visits.
